An enlarged liver in dogs can often be accompanied by ascites or fluid accumulation in the abdomen. There are a few reasons your dog can develop an enlarged liver.
There are several other potential causes for liver enlargement in dogs.
What causes enlarged spleen and liver in dogs. There are a number of diseases that can affect the functioning of a dogs liver and lead to enlargement. An enlarged liver in dogs can often be accompanied by ascites or fluid accumulation in the abdomen. Those with ascites will have an abnormally swollen belly.
An enlarged liver is most commonly found in older dogs. Hemangiosarcoma is an incurable malignant cancer forming a tumor or tumors in the cells that form the inner lining of blood vessels and can occur in the liver or spleen. This cancer metastasizes at a rapid.

In some cases an enlarged liver can be a sign of heart failure. Basically what happens is that the dogs heart enlarges and is therefore no longer able to pump blood as it should. The blood therefore accumulates in the dogs blood vessels and abdomen which leads to the liver becoming enlarged.

Other causes that are not cancerous include nodular hyperplasia a benign tumor when dogs are anesthetized in stressful situations when blood parasites are present or if there is bruising hematomas affecting the spleen. If the enlargement is caused by cancer it develops in the lining of the blood vessels. A veterinarian may incidentally find a mass when palpating the abdomen on yearly health exams.
Splenic masses can be caused by a variety of diseases ranging from infection abscess to a tumor benign vs. Malignant which is more common. Additionally systemic diseases or malpositioning of the spleen may also increase its overall size.
Splenic torison is a problem that affects deep-chested dogs. In this case the spleen enlarges called splenomegaly in medical terminology because the blood vessels twist and it is over-filled with blood. Blood clots develop in the blood vessels and the spleen dies off a condition known as necrosis.
